LSU downs No. 22 Vols in OT
NCAA Basketball Betting Lines
03/09/2007 - Atlanta, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Glen Davis scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the LSU Tigers to a 76-67 overtime win against the 22nd- ranked Tennessee Volunteers in the first round of the SEC Tournament.
Terry Martin added 15 points and Magnum Rolle 10 for LSU, which has won three of its last four games and will face Mississippi on Friday.
Chris Lofton deposited 21 points for Tennessee, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Leading by one in overtime, LSU went down low to Davis, who completed a three- point play that put the Tigers ahead 71-67 with 1:55 left to play. After Wayne Chism's missed three-point attempt Martin scored on a layup that pushed the lead to 73-67 with just 52 seconds remaining.
Davis made three free-throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Lofton scored the first seven points of the game as Tennessee jumped out to an early lead. LSU responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a Rolle jumper that moved the Tigers ahead, 9-7, with 12:51 left in the first half.
After a Davis three-point play with 5:09 remaining before the break gave LSU a 22-18 advantage, Duke Crews hit a layup which sparked a 7-0 spurt and a three- point Tennessee cushion, 25-22, with 2:31 to go.
The Volunteers held a 27-25 edge at the intermission.
Much like the first half the second began with a couple of streaks. After a Chism free throw, the Tigers embarked on a 8-0 surge, capped by two Darnell Lazare foul shots that gave LSU back the lead, 33-28, early in the second half.
Moments later back-to-back threes by Ryan Childress and Ramar Smith capped a 9-0 Volunteer surge which again gave Tennessee the edge, 37-33.
This trend continued throughout the second half as the lead continued to consistently change hands.
Tennessee seemed to take control when a Lofton trey put the Volunteers up 57-52 with 4:43 on the clock, but LSU answered with a 10-0 run, capped by two Davis free-throws and the Tigers held a short-lived five-point lead with 1:15 remaining.
Lofton's tip-in with 12 ticks remaining in regulation capped a 7-2 Vols run and tied the score at 64 apiece. After a foul gave Tennessee the ball back, Volunteer guard JaJuan Smith missed a desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer and the contest went into overtime.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards
Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.
Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.
Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.
Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.
All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.
A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.

In what should be an outstanding Saturday of March Madness betting action, the top four teams in the South and West Regions square off in what should be extremely close match-ups. Three of the four teams are coming off extremely close games on Thursday evening, only UCLA won semi comfortably over Pitt 64-55.
Ohio State is coming off their second game in a row where in all reality they should have lost. Of course that doesn’t matter now since the name of the game is “survive and advance” but as the tournament continues, they can’t afford to keep getting down to their opponents early. Kansas also avoided a scare by holding off a scrappy Southern Illinois squad. In the third thrilling game of the evening Memphis pulled off the minor upset (+3.5) despite being the higher seed to Texas A&M.
Although the spreads are fairly small for Saturday’s games, MySportsbook.com continue to bet against the underdogs. Despite OSU’s two scares, 86% of the “betting public” feels the Buckeyes (-1.5) have what it takes to make the Final Four. In fact, so much of the early money is on OSU that the line has already moved from -1 to -1.5. In the second game of the doubleheader, Kansas and their high-powered offense are 2 point favorites as they take on UCLA and their effective defense. About 63% of the early money thus far is once again backing the favorites. If those percentages stay that high, don’t be surprised if this line moves as well. If you like Kansas (-2) you might want to jump on it early.
Memphis vs. Ohio State
Both squads were involved in thrillers on Thursday evening and should come out fired up. OSU can ill afford to get behind early like they did versus their previous two opponents (Xavier, Tennessee). Greg Oden needs to stay out of foul trouble; the Buckeyes are a completely different team when he is on the court. Memphis definitely has the athleticism and length to match-up with OSU. Of Memphis’ five leading minute earners, the shortest of the bunch is 6’5”. Each team has a very effective defense; Memphis surrenders 62.3 PPG whereas the Buckeyes give up only 61 PPG. With those type of numbers, it isn’t surprising that Memphis covered the UNDER almost 69% of the time this season. As a favorite, OSU has covered the UNDER almost 66% of the time over the last three seasons. The major concern for Memphis which is magnifies this time of the year is their brutal foul shooting (62%). This season, OSU is 17-11 ATS versus teams with a winning record and 7-2 ATS in all tournament games. Memphis has been an extremely reliable cover in tournament play in recent years with a 23-8 ATS record over the last three seasons.
UCLA vs. Kansas
In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, UCLA will play in a role which they are very unfamiliar with that of the underdog. Only twice this season have they been getting points from the handicappers and both times they covered. Over the last three seasons UCLA is a reliable 23-7 ATS in this unfamiliar role. UCLA has not fared well against Big 12 opponents recently going 1-7 ATS since 1997. Giving up only 59.6 PPG, UCLA will definitely look to do what they do best: keep this game as low scoring as possible. Their defense has been especially tough during the tournament. UCLA opponents have been able to muster up only 48.7 PPG while shooting a combined 34.5% from the field. UCLA definitely has a challenge at hand with a Kansas team that is capable of putting points on the board in bunches. As a team, they average 79 PPG and shoot an impressive 49.6% from the field and 39.4% from beyond the arc. During the tournament Kansas has been “lights out” from the field having shot 56.2%.
